Around 150,000 TEU and roughly 500,000 tonnes of bulk pass through Hososhima each year, handled across some 1,200 metres of quay on the eastern coast of Kyushu. Designated a special major port in 1951 and opened to traffic in 1964, the harbour at Hyuga in Miyazaki Prefecture splits into a commercial and an industrial section, exporting mainly industrial materials and finished products from the region.
