Horta's fame rests on its marina rather than its cargo throughput: the Faial Island port is one of the world's most visited yacht harbours and a traditional mid-Atlantic stopover for transatlantic sailors. Since 1986 it has also served as a hub for the Azores inter-island ferries, with Atlanticoline linking Faial to its neighbours in the central archipelago. A passenger ferry terminal opened in 2012, featuring a 393-metre wharf and two Ro/Ro ramps for vehicle traffic. Island supply moves on general-cargo and bulk feeder vessels, but containerised liner cargo for the Azores is concentrated at Ponta Delgada on São Miguel and Praia da Vitória on Terceira. Forwarders handling full containers or larger consignments therefore route through those two ports. Roads connect the harbour to Faial's interior; the island has no railway.
