Opened in 1903 and closed in December 1970, the Embarcadero del Hornillo near Águilas in Murcia was built to ship iron ore from the Las Menas and Bacares mines of the Sierra de los Filabres, hauled in by Britain's Great Southern of Spain Railway. Its slender steel ore-loading structure now stands as a protected cultural monument rather than a working berth, with no container, customs or bulk handling. Commercial sea freight for the area is handled at the neighbouring port of Águilas and at Cartagena. For shippers, El Hornillo carries no current cargo relevance.
