Founded in 1911 as Washington's second port district, Grays Harbor at Hoquiam grew up on logs, lumber and pulp before diversifying into the cargo mix it handles today. Its four deep-water marine terminals now move automobiles, breakbulk, and dry and liquid bulk such as soybean meal and biodiesel, with Terminal 4's 1,400-foot berth serving as the primary Ro/Ro and breakbulk facility. The port ranks as the West Coast's largest automobile export gateway and one of the closest US deep-water points to Asia. On-dock rail at the terminals links cargo directly to the transcontinental network and the inland Pacific Northwest. Containerised liner services are not offered here; shippers needing full-container moves use Tacoma or Seattle on Puget Sound, about 90 minutes away. Forest products remain a meaningful share alongside the growing vehicle and bulk volumes.
