# Honuapo

**Country:** United States
**Water Body:** North Pacific Ocean
**Harbor Size:** Very Small
**Harbor Type:** Open Roadstead
**GPS:** 19.0833, -155.5500

By 1883 a landing had been built at Honuapo, and for nearly six decades most of the sugar grown across the Ka'u district of Hawai'i Island shipped out through it. Operations ceased in 1942 after the U.S. military bombed the pier; the 1910 concrete structure survives only as ruins within today's Whittington Beach Park. The site has no commercial freight function — no container, customs or breakbulk handling takes place here. Ocean cargo for Hawai'i Island moves instead through Hilo and Kawaihae.
