For an island state thousands of kilometres from the mainland, one harbour carries the lifeline—Honolulu, Hawaii's largest commercial port on Sand Island. The bulk of the islands' consumer goods arrives here by sea, handled chiefly by two carriers: Matson, whose nine containerships call three times a week from the mainland and the Asia-Pacific, and Pasha Hawaii. Cargo is mainly containers plus roll-on/roll-off traffic, including vehicles. The roughly $555 million Kapalama Container Terminal adds an 84-acre cargo yard, about 1,800 feet of new berth and five all-electric ship-to-shore cranes, with completion targeted for end-2025. Once Pasha shifts to Kapalama, Matson takes over the entire Sand Island terminal and expands into Pier 51, lifting its capacity by around 30 percent. Road links distribute imports across Oahu. For forwarders, Honolulu is the main entry point for Hawaii-bound freight, feeding the neighbour islands onward. Cargo for Maui, the Big Island or Kauai routes via Kahului, Hilo or Nawiliwili, while mainland connections run mostly through Long Beach, Oakland or Tacoma.
