For more than a century until 1994, Honokaa on Hawaii Island's Hamakua coast shipped plantation sugar from a cliffside landing, lowering bags by inclined tramway and wire rope onto waiting steamers. That trade ended with the sugar industry, and the open roadstead — with a pier depth of only about 1.8 metres — no longer serves any commercial cargo role. There is no container, customs or bulk handling here, and freight relevance is minimal. Commercial shipments for the Big Island move through the deep-draft harbours of Hilo or Kawaihae.
