Developed as a coal port under French rule, Hon Gai (VN HON) on Vietnam's Gulf of Tonkin still ships anthracite from the Quang Ninh coalfields, the largest in Southeast Asia. Alongside coal, its quays handle limestone, cement and general break-bulk and dry-bulk cargo. The port forms part of the Hon Gai–Cai Lan complex, where containerised freight is concentrated at the neighbouring Cai Lan deep-water terminal, leaving Hon Gai – with berth depths near 11 metres – focused on bulk and breakbulk. Sitting in a sheltered bay, its approach channel silts comparatively little. Road access runs via the Ha Long–Hai Phong expressway and national route QL18 toward Hanoi. For pure container traffic, forwarders are best served by Cai Lan or the wider Hai Phong area (Lach Huyen).
