Once lined with Holland-America piers and the Bethlehem shipyard—which built Liberty ships during the Second World War before closing in 1982—Hoboken lost its cargo role when containerisation made its finger piers obsolete. Today the Hoboken waterfront on the Hudson in New Jersey is largely residential, parkland and ferry terminals, with no significant commercial breakbulk or container handling. Containers, RoRo and breakbulk for the New York/New Jersey region move through the nearby Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal and Global Container Terminal Bayonne.
