Few ports double as a polar logistics base, but Hobart is Australia's principal gateway to the Antarctic. Located on Tasmania's Derwent estuary and run by TasPorts, it handles around 1.6 million tonnes of cargo a year yet only a handful of containers—about 1,730 in 2023/24. Its trade centres on bulk log exports, bulk fuel imports, fish, ores and steel and iron goods rather than scheduled box services. For forwarders, Hobart suits project, polar and bulk consignments more than container freight. Tasmania's Bass Strait container and general cargo moves mainly through Bell Bay, Burnie and Devonport in the island's north.
