Accompanied and unaccompanied RoRo freight moving on ferries is the mainstay of cargo at Hirtshals, near the northern tip of Jutland. Color Line and Fjord Line run to the Norwegian ports of Kristiansand, Stavanger and Bergen, while Smyril Line calls at the Faroe Islands and Iceland, making this one of Denmark's principal ferry ports. Built as an artificial harbour between 1919 and 1931, it is also among the country's most important fishing ports. No container liner service operates here; hinterland links run via the E39 motorway and the rail network. For conventional container consignments, Aarhus or Aalborg are the appropriate alternatives.
