Deepwater piers fitted with gantry cranes and dedicated bulk berths define Hirohata, an area of the Port of Himeji whose channels, quays and breakwaters were all built by steelmaker Nippon Steel. Set on the Seto Inland Sea in Hyogo Prefecture, the works port is tied by road and rail into the Himeji industrial belt. It functions chiefly as a captive steelworks harbour rather than a general liner port. Container shipments and international freight are better handled through Kobe or the other areas of the Port of Himeji.
