Around 55,000 residents of Miyako Island depend on Hirara, the island's only significant port, for almost all of their daily goods. Coastal freighters and container vessels from Naha and the Japanese mainland land foodstuffs, building materials and consumer goods, while a ferry links the outlying island of Tarama. Known in earlier times as Harimizu and renamed Hirara in 1959, the harbour also receives cruise ships on the East China Sea. There is no international liner service, and hinterland reach is limited to the island's road network. For inter-regional container or break-bulk traffic, Naha remains the key port, with Ishigaki serving the Yaeyama group.
