Opened in 2005, the Hibiki Container Terminal in Kitakyushu was developed to give western Japan a deep-water container outlet, and its roughly 15-metre quay can take Post-Panamax vessels. The terminal anchors the Hibikinada area and serves industries clustered behind it, led by steel, automobiles, chemicals and electronics, while the adjacent Hibiki LNG terminal lands natural gas for northern Kyushu. Road and rail tie the site into the Kitakyushu–Fukuoka conurbation, and the wider Port of Kitakyushu acts as a distribution base toward the rest of Asia. Other quays around Hibikinada lean toward bulk and industrial cargo rather than boxes. For shippers moving freight to or from western Japan, Hibiki is a practical alternative to the nearby ports of Moji and Hakata, as well as to the major hub at Kobe.
