As Germany's only true offshore island, Helgoland (DEHGL) depends entirely on sea transport for supplies and trade: Helgoland Fracht-Kontor GmbH, working with shipping company Karl Meyer, runs a weekly liner service with two cargo vessels linking Cuxhaven to the island year-round. The South Harbour serves as the main cargo transshipment point and as a weather-protected arrival area for ferry passengers travelling mainly from Cuxhaven, Hamburg and Büsum. For 2026, the HGH harbour project company has commissioned Ostseestaal to build a new all-electric ferry, the Dünenfähre, 15.2 metres long with room for 95 passengers, replacing the "Witte Kliff" after 28 years on the roughly one-kilometre route to the neighbouring island of Düne. Helgoland handles no industrial-scale container or bulk cargo; freight is limited to general goods, food, building materials and restocking for the island's duty-free retail trade. There is naturally no rail or road link to the mainland, so all traffic moves by sea. Cuxhaven is the nearest mainland port with full cargo infrastructure.
