Istanbul's largest port by area is not its container gateway: Haydarpasa (TR HAY), on the Asian shore at the southern mouth of the Bosphorus, moves only around 140,000 TEU a year from a yard holding about 6,000 TEU. Operated by Turkish State Railways (TCDD), it is the city's only rail-served port, with 21 berths across two piers split between general cargo, dry bulk, container and RoRo traffic, and customs clearance and inspection handled on site. Against Turkish ports' combined throughput of roughly 553 million tonnes in 2025, its share is modest, but a regular RoRo link to Constanța makes it useful for Black Sea trade. The hinterland covers the Marmara industrial belt, reached directly by rail from the quays. The inner-city site caps expansion: a 1.3 million square metre redevelopment of the port and station is planned as a 49-year build-operate-transfer scheme worth about five billion dollars. For forwarders, Haydarpasa suits rail-linked general, project and RoRo cargo around Istanbul; larger container volumes route through Ambarli on the European side, Mersin or Izmir.
