At roughly 130 to 140 million tonnes a year, Hay Point ranks among the world's largest coal export gateways and handles essentially nothing else. Located about 38 kilometres south of Mackay in Queensland, it comprises two separate facilities: BHP Mitsubishi Alliance's Hay Point Coal Terminal, rated near 55 Mtpa, and the adjacent Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, one of the biggest metallurgical-coal installations anywhere. Coal arrives by rail from the Bowen Basin mines and is loaded via conveyors and shiploaders at long jetties in an open roadstead. There are no container, general-cargo or multipurpose berths, and the port is not set up for mixed customs clearance. For forwarders, Hay Point is purely a dry-bulk export node, not a call for boxes or project cargo. Containerised freight should route through Brisbane, while Gladstone covers broader bulk and breakbulk needs.
