Twelve to eighteen concentrate ships a year call at Hawk Inlet, the marine outlet of the Greens Creek mine on Admiralty Island in south-east Alaska, about 29 km south-west of Juneau. Operator Hecla loads silver, zinc, lead and gold concentrates here for smelting worldwide, while fuel and reagents arrive by barge. Concentrate is trucked roughly 13 km from the mill to the ship-loading facility on the inlet. This is a captive industrial terminal, with a berth depth around 7.9 m and no container, breakbulk or third-party customs handling. Sitting within the Tongass National Forest and Admiralty Island National Monument, the operation is subject to close environmental monitoring. For general cargo or containers, Juneau is the nearest suitable port.
