A 19th-century herring trade grew into something quite different: Harstad (NO HRD) is now the operations centre of northern Norway's offshore industry, with around 5,000 vessel calls a year. Equinor runs the Norne and Aasta Hansteen fields in the Norwegian Sea and Snøhvit and Johan Castberg in the Barents Sea from offices here; Johan Castberg, Norway's northernmost oil field, hit its plateau of roughly 220,000 barrels a day in June, with a 30-well drilling campaign running through 2026 and its supply base at Hammerfest rather than Harstad. Cargo work centres on the Stangnes quays, where NorLines, PostNord and Norbase operate terminals for breakbulk, coastal liner traffic and project loads, and the port's 2026 terms keep the public quays open to all cargo types. Fishing and ship repair remain part of the mix, backed by a medium dry dock and capacity for major overhauls, and as the birthplace of Hurtigruten the town is a fixed stop on Norway's coastal route. The cargo quay offers about 8 metres of draft and is built for conventional cargo rather than scheduled container services; for containerised freight, Narvik — with its rail link — and Tromsø are the practical alternatives.
