Equinor runs its Barents Sea operations out of Harstad (NO HRD) — including Johan Castberg, Norway's northernmost oil field, officially opened in August 2025. Grown from a 19th-century herring trade into a regional hub, this northern Norwegian port has a strong offshore oil-and-gas services character, with engineering firms such as Aibel clustering here too. It sees around 5,000 vessel calls a year and serves fishing, general cargo and ship repair, backed by a medium dry dock and capacity for major overhauls. As the birthplace of Hurtigruten, Harstad is also a fixed stop on Norway's coastal voyage line. Its cargo quay offers about 8 metres of draft and is built for conventional cargo rather than scheduled container services. For containerised freight in the region, Narvik — with its rail link — and Tromsø are the practical alternatives.
