A deep-water berth with around 12.5 metres alongside lets Harmac load ocean-going vessels directly at the Harmac Pacific pulp mill on the east coast of Vancouver Island, just south of Nanaimo. This is a captive industrial terminal rather than a common-user port: it ships northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) market pulp and receives wood fibre for the mill, which has a rated capacity of about 400,000 tonnes a year. The pulp moves to customers in Asia, Europe, North America and Latin America. Containerised, general or third-party cargo is effectively absent, as the wharf exists to serve the mill's pulp logistics. Forwarders with boxed or breakbulk freight for the region should look to the Duke Point terminal at Nanaimo or to the Port of Vancouver. Harmac remains a specialised industrial port focused on pulp export.
