Frisia's salt works and the Doeksen ferries are the names that shape day-to-day life at Harlingen, a Frisian port on the edge of the Wadden Sea. Behind tide gates and a controlling depth of only about 3.4 metres, the harbour takes small coasters and tankers rather than deep-sea ships, supporting an evaporated-salt export operation, a gas treatment plant, a recycling facility and the largest fishing fleet on the Dutch Wadden Sea.
