Roughly 1.8 million TEU moved through Wuhan's port in 2024, making it the leading inland river port on the middle Yangtze. Known historically as Hankow — now the Hankou district of Wuhan — it lies about 1,000 kilometres inland in Hubei province. The Yangluo port area concentrates the container traffic and is the largest inland container terminal on the middle and upper Yangtze, handling about 80 percent of Wuhan's imports and exports, with the Huashan terminal alongside; an expansion programme targets 5 million TEU of annual capacity. Water-rail intermodal service and 42 multimodal routes link the port to western China and, downstream, to the coastal deep-sea ports, and RoRo vehicle traffic is also handled. River draft of about 3.4 metres restricts calls to barges and feeder vessels. Ocean cargo transships at Shanghai downstream, while Chongqing extends the network further upriver.
