Roughly 1.8 million TEU moved through Wuhan's port (CN HNK) in 2024, making it the leading inland river port on the middle Yangtze. Known historically as Hankow — now the Hankou district of Wuhan — it lies about 1,000 kilometres inland in Hubei province. The Yangluo port area, with more than 20 container berths, concentrates that traffic and is the largest inland container terminal on the middle and upper Yangtze, handling about 80 percent of Wuhan's imports and exports alongside the Huashan terminal, with an expansion programme targeting 5 million TEU of annual capacity. Phase two of Yangluo's water-rail intermodal project adds around one million TEU of transfer capacity and makes the site China's largest inland water-rail hub, feeding 42 multimodal routes into western China. A direct river-sea service to Taicang opened in September 2025, moving Wuhan-made battery storage units in through containers, and links to Southeast Asia and Japan are being prepared. On the landside, China-Europe block trains depart from Wujiashan and Xianglushan with customs clearance on site — 545 trains ran from Wuhan in the first half of 2025. River draft of about 3.4 metres restricts calls to barges and feeder vessels; ocean cargo transships at Shanghai downstream, while Chongqing extends the network further upriver.
