For more than twenty years the Kaeleku Plantation shipped bagged sugar out of Hana Pier on Maui's east coast; that commercial chapter closed when the pier shut in 2010 and was removed in 2016. What remains – a single pier and boat ramp under Hawaii's Harbors Division – now serves small craft and recreation rather than freight. With no deep-draft berths, container handling or customs, Hana's relevance to shippers is minimal. Commercial Maui cargo is handled at the deep-water port of Kahului, about 90 km west.
