Equinor's Melkøya plant defines Hammerfest (NO HFT): it liquefies gas from the Barents Sea's Snøhvit field and exports around 6.5 billion cubic metres of LNG a year, plus condensate and LPG. At full output an LNG carrier of close to 150,000 cubic metres sails roughly every five to six days. The Askeladd Vest field, onstream since September 2025, sustains that output until onshore compression under the Snøhvit Future project starts; Equinor's December 2025 status update put that start in 2029 at a cost above NOK 20 billion, with the project about half built, and the accompanying electrification is expected to cut plant CO2 emissions by 850,000 tonnes a year. The port also hosts the Polarbase supply base serving Barents fields such as Goliat and Johan Castberg, with shore power at Polarbase, the Leirvika/ASCO base and the Fuglenes industry and fishing quays. Hammerfest is a central Finnmark fishing and aquaculture port and takes 15 to 25 cruise calls annually. Its town cargo quay is small — drafts of about 3.4 metres — geared to supply, fishing and general cargo rather than container lines; for containerised freight in northern Norway, Tromsø and Narvik are the nearest practical gateways.
