Equinor's Melkøya plant defines Hammerfest (NO HFT): it liquefies gas from the Barents Sea's Snøhvit field and exports around 6.5 billion cubic metres of LNG a year, plus condensate and LPG. At full output an LNG tanker carrying close to 150,000 cubic metres sails roughly every five to six days. Since September 2025 the Askeladd Vest field has added feed gas to extend plateau production, while Equinor's Snøhvit Future electrification project has slipped to a 2029 start. The port also hosts the Polarbase supply base, a logistics hub for Barents Sea oil and gas such as the Goliat and Johan Castberg fields, with fishing and a growing number of cruise calls alongside. The town's own cargo quay is small — drafts of only about 3.4 metres — geared to supply, fishing and general cargo rather than container lines. For containerised freight in northern Norway, Tromsø and Narvik are the nearest practical gateways.
