ArcelorMittal Dofasco's steelworks anchor the cargo mix at Hamilton (CA HAM), the busiest Canadian port on the Great Lakes, which handled about 10.35 million tonnes during the 2025 navigation season — close to 10.8 million across the wider HOPA network including Oshawa and the Thorold hub. Iron ore, coal and coke for the mill form the largest single block, with more than five million tonnes landed each year. Agri-food cargo — wheat, corn, soybeans, fertiliser and raw sugar — now accounts for roughly a third of throughput and grew three per cent in 2025. On Pier 10, Parrish & Heimbecker completed a third flour mill and two new storage silos in late 2025; that terminal moves around 1.3 million tonnes of grain a year. The St. Lawrence Seaway caps draft at roughly 8 metres, so Seaway-max bulkers and lakers call here rather than container ships, and there is no regular liner container service. Rail and highway links reach southern Ontario's industrial belt directly from the quays, and the Canada Border Services Agency has granted approval in principle for expanded rail-served capacity at the port. For ocean containers, shippers rely on Montréal (about 600 km by road) or HOPA's sister port at Oshawa.
