Four wharves divided between the Fukui and Nagahama basins give Hamada Ko, on the Sea of Japan coast of Shimane Prefecture, its working capacity. The port moves roughly 250,000 t of raw timber, 20,000 t of woodchips and about 700,000 t of domestic coastal cargo each year, making forest products and breakbulk its mainstay rather than containers. Scheduled container services do not call here, so FCL and reefer shipments are better routed through larger gateways. Part of the vessel traffic loads logs and used vehicles bound for Russian ports, a trade that has thinned since recent export restrictions on cars to Russia. Inland distribution runs along the San'in main rail line and the regional road network serving western Shimane. For containerised or international consignments, Sakaiminato to the east and the Kanmon/Shimonoseki area offer stronger alternatives.
