Two-point-three million tonnes and approximately 40,000 TEU annually put Halmstad among Sweden's ten largest seaports on the Kattegat coast. Operated by Hallands Hamnar, its seven terminals provide roughly 2.4 kilometres of quay, four Ro-Ro ramps and berth depths up to 12 metres, handling some 900 vessel calls a year; Stena Line and CMA CGM are among the regular callers. Forest products, steel and steel scrap, recycling materials and imported cars are the mainstay commodities. In March 2026, Oceanhamnen was inaugurated — a new 200-metre quay with 12-metre water depth and 25,000 m² of cargo-handling area, built at a cost of around SEK 230 million as Phase 1 of a SEK 1.4 billion infrastructure programme running through 2035. From May 2026, Samskip's vessels Arnarfell and Helgafell run a weekly Iceland–Scandinavia container service via Halmstad, adding approximately 250 boxes per week covering food, building materials, vehicles and seafood. Road and rail links reach the southern Swedish hinterland and the industrial districts of Småland. For larger container volumes, Gothenburg remains the dominant hub, with Helsingborg a further west-coast alternative.
