About 450,000 tonnes of newsprint leave Hallstavik each year, alongside inbound flows of roughly 35,000 t of clay, 30,000 t of fuel oil and some 50,000 m³ of pulpwood – the signature of a dedicated mill port. Hallstavik is owned and run by Holmen Paper, whose Hallsta mill ranks among Sweden's largest, and it handles around 247 vessel calls a year in a sheltered bay at the head of Edeboviken, about 54 nm north of Stockholm. Draught is limited to roughly 7.0 m and daytime length to 185 m. Ice can form from late December to late March, but the port is normally kept open through winter. There is no container or groupage service here. For forwarders it is the gateway for the mill's paper, pulp and project breakbulk. Containerised or general cargo is better handled at Gävle, Hargshamn or the Stockholm Norvik container terminal.
