Two deepwater terminals define Halifax: the PSA Halifax Atlantic Hub at the south end, whose 800-metre berth and 16.5-metre depth handle Explorer-class vessels of up to 16,020 TEU, and Fairview Cove to the north, equipped with on-dock double-stack rail. From those quays CN Rail hauls containers directly to central Canada and the US Midwest, making inland reach rather than local demand the port's main selling point. Shippers needing stronger US Northeast or St. Lawrence coverage weigh Montreal, Saint John or New York/New Jersey as alternatives.
