Opened to foreign trade in 1859 as one of Japan's first treaty ports, Hakodate today works mainly as a ferry, fishing and multipurpose harbour rather than a container hub. Sitting at the southern tip of Hokkaido on the Tsugaru Strait, it serves as the sea gateway between Honshu and the island, with ferries to Aomori and Oma. On the cargo side it handles dry bulk such as grain and coal plus general and project cargo, while its fishing fleet — squid above all — drives much local activity. Eleven berths, drafts to around 14 metres and a medium dry dock give it real value for supply, ship repair and conventional cargo. Container traffic, however, is limited.
