Set on the Upper Lynn Canal in south-east Alaska, Haines is one of the few ports in the region with a direct road link – the Haines Highway running north to the Alaska Highway and the Canadian Yukon. Passenger and vehicle traffic moves through the Alaska Marine Highway System ferry terminal at Lutak Dock, while freight arrives chiefly by dry-cargo barge (operators such as Alaska Marine Lines) and as bulk fuel. The port offers no liner container service or international container customs; its cargo function is community resupply and onward carriage by road. For forwarders this makes Haines an intermodal point for Yukon-bound shipments rather than a conventional seaport. Ore, cruise and larger breakbulk traffic is handled at nearby Skagway or at Juneau.
