Where Shanghai sits 180 nm to the north handling millions of boxes, Haimen plays a far smaller role as the central port area of the Taizhou Port Group on the Jiaojiang estuary in Zhejiang. Its trade is built on general and regional bulk cargo – timber, coal, fertiliser, cement, iron and steel, grain and petroleum – with only modest container volumes. A shallow, tidal river approach limits calls to vessels of roughly 5,000 dwt, so deep-sea consignments transfer through larger regional gateways. Forwarders use Haimen for local breakbulk and bulk parcels, routing containerised freight via Ningbo-Zhoushan or Shanghai instead.
