Where Yangpu specialises in container transshipment, Haikou combines box traffic with the roll-on/roll-off and passenger ferries that link Hainan island to the mainland across the Qiongzhou Strait. Spread over three port areas – Xiuying, Xinhai and Macun – it offers more than 4,600 metres of quay and over 30 berths, handling around 2 million TEU a year. China designates it a national main port, a Class I open port and Hainan's international container trunk-line port. The build-out of the Hainan Free Trade Port is raising the profile of customs processing here, including duty-favoured imports. Inland distribution runs via expressways and the island railway, with onward mainland connections through Zhanjiang.
