Six deep-water wharves at Lach Huyen, a brand-new 73-hectare smart terminal and a 900-metre quay capable of berthing 18,000-TEU vessels define the infrastructure that has turned Hai Phong (VN HPH) into northern Vietnam's principal seaport. Set along the Cam River where it meets the Gulf of Tonkin, the port handles over 5 million TEU a year, with throughput projected to exceed 8.2 million TEU in 2025. The Lach Huyen deep-water area takes container ships of up to 12,000 TEU and general-cargo ships up to 160,000 DWT, while the new Hateco terminal (HHIT) can serve two ultra-large vessels at once. Total cargo reached about 190 million tonnes in 2024 and is expected to climb to roughly 212 million tonnes in 2025. Global carriers link the region to East Asia, Europe and North America. Exports are dominated by containerised consumer goods, electronics and textiles, balanced by imports of raw materials, machinery and components. Road, rail and inland-waterway connections reach the hinterland around Hanoi and the Chinese border. For cargo bound for southern Vietnam, Cai Mep and the Ho Chi Minh City terminals (Cat Lai) remain the natural alternatives.
