Northern Vietnam's principal seaport and the main container gateway for the Hanoi industrial zone, Hai Phong (VN HPH) lines the Cam River where it meets the Gulf of Tonkin. Hai Phong Port, the leading terminal operator, became the first northern Vietnamese port to surpass 2 million TEU and targets 3 million TEU in 2026. The commissioning of berths 3 and 4 at the Lach Huyen deep-water zone — which handled around 252,000 TEU in its first year and accommodates ships of up to 12,000 TEU — together with the completed Dinh Vu–Tan Vu shipping channel upgrade, continues to expand capacity. The Hateco Hai Phong International Container Terminal (HHIT), opened in 2025 with 73 hectares and a 900-metre quay, handles two ultra-large vessels of up to 18,000 TEU simultaneously with an annual capacity of 2.2 million TEU; the Haiphong International Container Terminal (HICT) accommodates vessels up to 14,000 TEU with a throughput capacity of 1.1 million TEU per year. Global carriers link the port to East Asia, Europe and North America; electronics, textiles and consumer goods lead exports. Road, rail and inland waterways connect the hinterland to Hanoi and the Chinese border; ongoing expansion plans target additional berths at Lach Huyen and Nam Do Son alongside logistics development in the Xuan Cau non-tariff zone. For cargo bound to southern Vietnam, Cai Mep and the Ho Chi Minh City terminals (Cat Lai) remain the natural alternatives.
