Innoshima rose around 1900 as one of Japan's shipbuilding centres, and Habu Ko (JP HAB) on the island's southeast still reflects that heritage in the Seto Inland Sea west of Onomichi. Yards in Habu-cho — today operated by Naikai Shipbuilding on the former Hitachi Zosen site — give the port slipways and a large dry dock rather than commercial cargo berths. Its working profile is newbuilding, ship repair and steel handling for the yards, not container throughput. Channel depths near 7.9 m and the yard basins suit construction and maintenance of sizeable vessels. Habu also serves as a local ferry harbour, with links to Imabari and Iwagi island among others. Containerised or conventional trade cargo is routed through nearby Onomichi/Mihara or the larger container ports of Mizushima (Kurashiki) and Kobe.
