Anchored by one of the world's largest steelworks, Gwangyang is as much an industrial port as a container gateway. Operated on the Korea Strait near Yeosu, it is South Korea's second-busiest box port after Busan, handling about 2.01 million TEU in 2024, up 7.8 percent year on year. POSCO's Gwangyang mill drives heavy flows of iron ore, coal and finished steel across the quays. The container terminal is well equipped, with more than 30 ship-to-shore cranes and yard capacity for around 123,000 TEU, while channel and pier depths exceeding 20 metres accommodate large vessels. In July 2024 POSCO International opened the country's first privately owned LNG terminal here, with six tanks totalling 930,000 cubic metres. Rail and road links connect the port to the industrial belt of southern Korea. For pure container volumes shippers may prefer Busan, while Ulsan is an option for petrochemical cargo.
