The Mississippi State Port Authority (MSPA) and terminal operator SSA Marine have built Gulfport into the United States' second-largest green-fruit import port, handling about four billion bananas a year on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The deep-water port (UN/LOCODE US GPT, 9.4-metre pier depth), founded in 1902, moves over 200,000 TEU and more than 2 million tonnes of cargo annually across 204 acres with nearly 6,000 feet of berthing and 1,400 refrigerated plugs, combining container, reefer and breakbulk handling. For very large container volumes or a wider choice of line services, New Orleans and Mobile remain the bigger gateways, while Gulfport excels in reefer and fresh-produce cargo.
