About four billion bananas a year make Gulfport the second-largest green-fruit import port in the United States, on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Founded in 1902, the deep-water port (UN/LOCODE US GPT, 9.4-metre pier depth) moves over 200,000 TEU and more than 2 million tonnes of cargo annually across 204 acres with nearly 6,000 feet of berthing and 1,400 refrigerated plugs, combining container, reefer and breakbulk handling. Fresh produce arrives from Central and South America while frozen chicken and pork move out — an efficient round-trip model for reefer boxes. In May 2026 the Mississippi State Port Authority secured a US$11.25 million federal grant for new reefer racks and rail improvements connecting the east and west piers; Terminal 4 is simultaneously under development and a fourth ship-to-shore crane entered service in August 2026, adding a fourth Crowley liner service. Apparel, paper, cotton, vehicles and construction supplies also cross the quays. In 2026 the US Army Corps of Engineers signed off on a channel-deepening recommendation to 46 feet, pending congressional approval in the Water Resources Development Act. For very large container volumes or a wider choice of line services, neighbouring New Orleans and Mobile remain the bigger gateways, while Gulfport holds its own in reefer and fresh-produce cargo.
