More than two million TEU a year make Guayaquil by far Ecuador's largest container port and one of the key gateways on South America's Pacific coast. The port sits on the Guayas River, reached through its estuary and the Canal del Morro; the main facility, Contecon Guayaquil (CGSA, operated by ICTSI), spans about 115 hectares and is scaled for up to 1.4 million TEU, while the neighbouring Terminal Portuario de Guayaquil (TPG) handled around 801,000 TEU in 2024. Bananas define the trade: Ecuador is the world's largest banana exporter, and Guayaquil consolidates this reefer cargo through thousands of reefer plugs and a new on-dock cold-storage facility. The hinterland — Quito, the Andean highlands and the coastal farming regions — is served mainly by truck, with effectively no freight rail. The limiting factor is the river location, with tidal windows and restricted draft in the access channel. For the largest vessel classes, traffic increasingly shifts to the downstream deep-water terminal at Posorja (DP World), which complements Guayaquil. For southern banana volumes, Puerto Bolívar is a further alternative.
