Guangzhou Port Group runs one of the world's ten largest container gateways, with the wider port moving around 27 million TEU in 2025, up roughly 8%. Set in the Pearl River Delta of southern China, it links Guangdong's industrial hinterland with the South China Sea. The bulk of box traffic now passes through the Nansha port area, which alone handled more than 22 million TEU in 2025. Nansha Terminal 4, opened in 2022, is China's first fully automated facility for combined river-sea-rail transport and is designed for around 5 million TEU. Beyond containers, the port handles dry bulk such as coal, ore and grain, along with vehicles and petroleum products. Hinterland reach combines rail, road and an extensive web of inland-barge feeders along the Pearl River. A fifth-phase Nansha expansion worth about 14.5 billion yuan, under construction since 2025, will add a further 6.7 million TEU and lift the area's capacity toward 35 million TEU. Shippers in the delta can also weigh Shenzhen (Yantian, Shekou) and Hong Kong as alternatives.
