Iron ore is effectively the only cargo here. Operated by Vale, the Ilha Guaíba Marine Terminal in Sepetiba Bay, some 50 nautical miles west of Rio de Janeiro, is a dedicated ore-export facility rated at around 33 million tonnes a year. Conveyors and shiploaders move ore and pellet feed railed down from the mines of Minas Gerais onto Capesize tonnage: the South Pier takes vessels up to 350,000 DWT at 22 metres' draft, the North Pier up to 180,000 DWT at 18 metres. The terminal handles no containers, no general cargo and no mixed-consignment customs clearance — it is a captive industrial berth rather than a public multipurpose port. Shippers moving boxes or project cargo around Rio use neighbouring Itaguaí/Sepetiba, which has a container terminal, or the port of Rio de Janeiro itself.
