Ferrosilicon and aluminium ingots are the cargoes that define Grundartangi, an industrial harbour on the northern shore of Hvalfjörður in south-west Iceland, about 49 km from Reykjavík. The port, run by Faxaflóahafnir (Associated Icelandic Ports), serves two plants: Norðurál's aluminium smelter and an Elkem ferrosilicon works, exporting their output and importing raw materials such as alumina, carbon anodes and quartz in bulk. Roughly 250 vessels and around 1.5 million tonnes of cargo are handled each year. Since 2024 a new casthouse has added aluminium billets to Norðurál's export mix. Channel and pier depths of about 12.5 metres suit bulk and breakbulk carriers, but Grundartangi is not a container port and handles no scheduled liner traffic. Because Iceland has no railways, all hinterland movement is by road. Shippers needing container services to Iceland should route via Reykjavík (Sundahöfn) or Reykjanesbær instead.
