Deepwater berths, a 12,000-tonne silo and around 100,000 tonnes of open storage give Greenore, on Carlingford Lough in County Louth, the makings of a focused bulk and breakbulk port rather than a container gateway. It is Ireland's only privately owned commercial port, run since 2014 by the Doyle Shipping Group after its acquisition from Burke Shipping. The quays handle non-containerised cargo such as animal feed, fertiliser, coal, timber, woodchip and steel, and the port is the island's leading importer of steel rebar, with capacity for over 250,000 tonnes of steel a year and storage for some 80,000 tonnes of rebar. Project cargo, including wind-turbine components, moves across its heavy-lift berths, supported by warehousing and ships-agency, stevedoring and forwarding services from DSG. No scheduled container line calls here, and hinterland distribution runs by road along the M1 towards Dundalk, Dublin and Belfast. Shippers needing containers turn to Dublin, nearby Warrenpoint or Belfast.
