When the Fox River ice clears each spring, lakers and smaller saltwater vessels return to Green Bay to load and discharge the dry and liquid bulk that keeps north-east Wisconsin building and running. Around 14 port businesses spread along roughly three miles of riverfront move more than two million tons a year across some 200 vessel calls. The staple commodities are limestone, cement, salt, coal, petroleum products, liquid asphalt, tallow and wood pulp — not containers, which the port does not handle. Connected to the Atlantic through the St. Lawrence Seaway, Green Bay is strictly seasonal, closing in winter, so shippers must plan around the navigation window. For containerised freight, Milwaukee or Chicago are the practical gateways, linked onward to the region by rail and road.
