Bauxite ore is the single commodity that defines this remote harbour on the Gulf of Carpentaria, about 14 km from the town of Nhulunbuy. Mined on the Gove Peninsula since 1971, the ore moves through dedicated bulk-loading wharves onto specialised carriers bound for international buyers and for the alumina refineries at Gladstone, Queensland. Shippers needing containers or customs-cleared general cargo should route via Darwin instead.
