Six rail tracks long enough for full 750-metre trains, on-dock cranes and a dense shuttle network give Gothenburg an inland reach unmatched in the Nordics — about 60% of all containers now move by rail. Scandinavia's largest container port handled a record 934,000 TEU in 2025, up 4%, while rail volumes climbed 5% to an all-time high of 529,000 TEU. The APM Terminals facility is the only one in Sweden able to take 24,000-TEU vessels and the sole Nordic port offering direct intercontinental calls without transshipment on the North Continent. The new 144,000-square-metre Arendal 2 area completed the port's biggest expansion in four decades. Gothenburg is also Sweden's principal energy port, handling crude oil and refinery products, alongside major ro-ro and car-terminal operations. Stena Line ferries connect the city with Germany and Denmark. For cargo that does not need a deep-sea call, Helsingborg, Aarhus or Wallhamn serve as practical alternatives.
