Around 1.5 million tonnes of cargo move through Goole each year, making it Britain's largest inland port and the focus of roughly £800 million in trade. Sitting on the River Ouse some 80 km from open sea, the port is operated by Associated British Ports and reached by coasters small enough to navigate the river. Its cargo mix spans dry and liquid bulks, agribulk, steel, forest products and occasional containers and project loads. A permanently impounded dock keeps water levels constant, allowing heavy-lift work across most berths. A dedicated rail-freight terminal links the port to the national network, complementing road access into the Yorkshire hinterland. For deep-draught ocean vessels and container lines, the nearby Humber ports of Hull and Immingham are the natural complement.
