Rock salt and grain define cargo at Goderich, the only deepwater port on the eastern shore of Lake Huron. Roughly 250 vessels call each year, most loading rock salt straight from the Sifto mine – the largest operating salt mine in the world – at a quayside terminal that ships around six million tonnes annually. The grain elevator holds about 125,000 tonnes of corn, soybeans and wheat, with individual lake freighters loading 12,000 to 21,000 tonnes. Calcium chloride rounds out the bulk traffic; containers and international liner services are not handled here. Hinterland distribution runs by road and rail, supplying salt to Michigan, Ohio and southern Ontario. Shippers needing container or breakbulk options should look to Hamilton or routings via the St. Lawrence Seaway.
