The first cargo ship crossed the Siuslaw bar in 1877, bound upriver for the canneries, and ferries once linked Florence to Glenada on the south bank until the river bridge opened in 1936. Today Glenada is a small riverside settlement on the Oregon coast with no commercial port function; the surviving waterfront activity is recreational, centred on the Port of Siuslaw marina. Real cargo movements on this coast run through Coos Bay, the region's deepwater port, and Newport on Yaquina Bay.
