Around 418,000 tonnes of exports and some 57,000 tonnes of imports pass each year through Gisborne, the Eastland Port operation on Poverty Bay and New Zealand's most easterly commercial harbour. It ranks among the country's largest log-export ports — second only by volume of timber — shipping logs, plywood and woodchip alongside a growing trade in kiwifruit, apples and squash. Its berths are configured for general, bulk, timber and oil cargoes, and it runs no scheduled container line. The recent Wharf 7 rebuild renewed capacity and supports the port's push into produce. Road carries freight across the rugged East Coast hinterland, with no through rail link. Shippers needing container services route through the larger ports of Napier and Tauranga.
