At roughly 4.5 million TEU in 2025 — a 14% jump and an all-time record — Gioia Tauro ranks among the busiest container ports in the Mediterranean, yet about 96% of those boxes never touch Italian soil. The Calabrian port is a pure transshipment hub, relaying containers ship-to-ship on the Asia–Mediterranean–North Europe trades. Operations centre on the Medcenter Container Terminal (MCT), controlled by MSC's Terminal Investment Limited, which has poured more than €140 million into new equipment and launched intermodal rail links to northern Italy in early 2025. Some 3.4 km of quay, seven berths and 18 metres of depth handle the largest container vessels afloat. An adjacent car and ro-ro terminal broadens the offer, though Calabria's hinterland generates little local cargo. Customs clearance and import-export gateway functions are limited here. Shippers with genuine Italian import or export consignments are usually better served by Genoa, Naples or Salerno.
